Jesus teachings stands apart from others for many reasons. Among the reasons, the most important one is the parables, illustrations and examples used by master can be understood by any person of any level of intelligence irrespective of the time. As you start learning more and more, you understand HIM deeper and deeper. Applicability and relevance of his illustrations stands true at all times to various levels of intellectuals is the biggest quality of his teachings.
In this case, though there is many explanations including the one of fig fruits representing Israel and the what is going to happen to Israel, I would like to think in a very simple way, because Jesus has told this illustration to very simple unqualified[in our eyes] fishermen people - his disciples- to understand.
My understanding is as follows:
This has happened just the day before the cleansing of the Jerusalem temple. That day he went to the temple in the evening and looked at everything inside very carefully and went out. He must have been very disturbed .....
when he saw the activities inside the church and that agony must have been in his mind the next day morning when he was going to the church. This cursing of Fig tree happens in the morning when he was going to church.

Now understand the Fig tree : The fruits and leaves till it becomes ripe are of same colour. Before the season, that is towards March the leaves begin to appear, and there appears quite a crop of small knobs, not the real figs, but a kind of early forerunner. They grow to the size of green almonds[ called taqsh], in which condition they are eaten by peasants and others when hungry. if the leaves appear without any taqsh, that is a sign that there will be no figs. Since Jesus found "nothing but leaves" - leaves without any taqsh- he knew that "it was an absolutely hopeless, fruitless fig tree". It is the same situation as explained in situation- 3 above.
Marks 11-20 -23 gives the explanation: Here Jesus explains : why the tree has withered and not why he has cursed ?. Why he has cursed still remains a mystery to me for my intelligence. He probably made the tree to whither because he wanted them to know that if one does not serve the purpose for which he was planted, he will wither away at the sight of GOD. He also wanted the disciples to know that one will have control not only on living things but also even on non living things [ Mountain or Dead body ] and passive objects, provided you have absolute faith. Absolute faith is you don’t doubt GOD.
